Orthodontic Emergency Care Tips
While orthodontic emergencies don't happen often, it's essential to know when to seek immediate help and when you can handle minor issues on your own. Here's a simple guide to help you tell the difference between a major orthodontic problem and a minor one.
Orthodontic Emergencies
1. Acute Injury to the Mouth, Jaw, or Teeth: If you accidentally hurt your mouth, jaw, or teeth, whether you're wearing braces or not, it's crucial to contact your dentist right away. They might need to take an X-ray to assess the damage. If your braces or orthodontic appliances are affected, they might require adjustments or replacement, depending on how severe the injury is.
2. Infected Teeth: Infections can occur after orthodontic treatment, whether it's related to your braces or not. If you feel increasing pain or swelling around a tooth, contact your dentist promptly.
Minor Orthodontic Issues
While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, minor problems are more common. Here are some examples that you can often handle yourself or address during your next scheduled appointment:
- Poking wire: You can use wax to cover it temporarily until your next visit.
- Loose bracket: Notify your orthodontist during your next appointment.
- Loose elastic band: The orthodontist can fix this at your next visit.
- Loose wire: If it's uncomfortable, use a cotton swab or tweezers to adjust it or clip it with sterilized nail clippers. Cover any clipped ends with wax.
- Loose appliance: Contact your orthodontist for a scheduled repair.
- Headgear that doesn't fit: Let your orthodontist know.
- Lost or broken elastic band: The orthodontist can replace it.
- General soreness: Some discomfort is normal, especially after recent orthodontic work. Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to soothe minor abrasions.
Remember, none of these issues are emergencies unless they cause acute or prolonged pain or discomfort. If you're unsure, don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or to schedule an appointment with our office at (972) 722-4376. We're here to help.
