When you think of braces, you might picture teenagers. But did you know that braces aren't just for kids? Let's explore why adults are also benefiting from orthodontic care.

In fact, the oldest patient Dr. Beaber started was 86, and she was so impressed with the changes that 6 of her girlfriends from the nursing home also got Damon Braces.

More Adults Are Embracing Braces : When Dr. Beaber started his orthodontic practice in 2004, most patients were children. While this is still true to some extent, there's been a shift over the years. Today, half of our patients are aged between 12 and 18, while 25% are younger and 25% are older adults. Dr. Beaber has some advice for you. He understands that Halloween is a time of indulgence, but he wants to make sure you can enjoy it while taking care of your braces. Here's what you need to know in simple terms:

Chocolate is Your Friend: Most chocolates are braces-friendly. Think Hershey's Bars or Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Just watch out for chocolate bars with nuts or sticky caramel, as those can cause trouble. Those small fun-sized candy bars you get on Halloween should be okay as long as they're not super hard or crunchy.

Caramel Apples with Caution: Caramel apples are a Halloween classic, but biting into one can be risky for your braces. Instead, slice them into small bite-sized pieces before enjoying.

Should I cut the wire myself? It’s generally NOT recommended as you can pop off additional brackets. However, if you do, there are YouTube videos that show how to use a large toe nail clipper or wire cutter to do so. Again, probably only in an extreme case or emergency would I recommend that.
Loose or Broken Wires - If a wire in your braces becomes loose or broken, use a cotton swab or pencil eraser to gently push the wire back into place. If this doesn't work, cover the end of the wire with orthodontic wax to prevent it from poking your cheeks or gums. If the wire is causing severe pain or has become stuck, contact the office immediately.
Loose Bands or Brackets - If a band or bracket becomes loose, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax to prevent any irritation or discomfort. Contact the office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment for repair. Hold onto the bracket or band in a safe place like a ziploc bag and bring to your next appointment!
Pain or Discomfort - If you experience pain or discomfort after getting braces or during treatment, try taking over-the-counter pain medication, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Applying a warm washcloth or using a heating pad can also help to ease any discomfort. If your pain or discomfort persists, contact the office to discuss further options. Some more natural alternatives are to use a high quality essential oil like clove which will dull the pain and discomfort.

What was your biggest problem with your teeth/smile?

I wasn’t overly concerned with my smile. My top teeth were straight enough, but my bottom teeth were very crooked. It was hard to floss, and I would get food stuck in them often.

What brought you in to get braces?

I brought my 13-year-old in for a consultation and decided to go ahead and ask what Dr. B thought about my teeth. My Mother (72 years old at the time) had just done Invisalign because she was biting her lower lip pretty frequently. I had the same problem, but not as frequent. I was afraid that I may have the same issues as her as I aged.

Have you had braces before? If so, for how long?

Yes, I had them when I was in 13. I had when I was in 7 ^th grade, and I kept them on until my Sophomore or Junior year. Both of my siblings also had braces (both have also had work as adults. One had braces again and the other opted for veneers).

Diagnosis: Slight class II bite (lower jaw back), crowding, and rotations of the upper & lower jaw, poor bite alignment
Treatment: Damon Clear Braces

Treatment Duration (Actual): 18 Months

Treatment Duration (Recommended) : 22 Months

How as your experience with Damon braces?

I remember braces hurting as an adolescent. I remember having to take medication to help with the pain. My teeth were certainly sore this time around after the adjustments, but I didn’t need to take any pain meds. Maybe I’ve had more experiences, but it didn’t seem as bad.

When should I bring my child in for an orthodontist consultation?

What is the best age to bring my child in for an orthodontist consultation?

The American Association of Orthodontists , recommends that your child’s first orthodontic consultation should happen no later than age 7.

My recommended age for Phase 1:

For girls, 7 and 9 ½ years of age.

For boys, 8 and 10 ½ years of age.

Why?

1 in 5 kids already show signs of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD) by the age of 10 (JADA November 2015)
1 in 3 kids has a retruded jaw (lower jaw back)
1 in 10 kids have an underbite (retruded or upper jaw is back)
70-80% of kids have tooth crowding (race-specific)
1 in 20 kids have spacing issues (this is a bone problem, not a tooth problem)
2 in 5 kids are likely headed down a surgical path. Many orthodontists will camouflage the need by extracting 2-4 bicuspids.
1 in 12 kids have one or more potentially impacting canines
1 in 50 kids are thumb suckers
1 in 50 have skeletal openbites
1 in 20 kids is congenitally missing 1 or more permanent teeth (laterals or lower second premolars are most common)
1 in 12 kids is in speech therapy (why do they not call it speech solutions instead of therapy)

The primary cause for most of these issues is a narrow maxillary transverse. The upper jaw doesn’t develop enough width and can cause an array of problems.

The upper & lower jaws grow in three different dimensions; width (left to right), up and down, & front to back. Width is mostly done growing by the age of 5. The jaw continues to develop vertically (or up and down) and finally front to back (anteroposterior). All of this is happening when the child is 7-8 years of age and finishes about the time a child finishes pubertal growth. We rely on this front to back growth to make space for the adult teeth. More than 80% of children are not developing the width needed to have space for all of the adult teeth resulting in moderate to severe crowding.

What’s the goal of starting this early?

Phase 1 reduces the chances of needing first premolar extractions, either two or four most often recommended. The chance of extractions is reduced to less 2% for children who begin maxillary expansion with a BONDED expander when they are around 7-8 years old in my office. This percentage increases to around 10% or less if they begin before their 12th birthday if the patients follow my treatment recommendations.

In my treatment of children older than 15 years of age all the way to age 86, considered to be the adult patient with no more growth remaining, I have still been able to avoid extractions greater than 85% of the time. The biggest concern is a substantial decrease of long term stability.

The goal of Phase 1, or the use of an expander, is to positively influence the direction or growth of the jaw bones before they fully develop; the earlier the better. A good analogy for this is to think about a potter who has the desire to make a bowl. It is easier to start with a lump of clay and model the bowl in the desired shape and size than to take a partially formed bowl and reshape it.
